16 Promises to my Travel Loving Heart

16 promises to my travel loving heartI’ve always loved to travel. Travel loving is a MASSIVE part of who I am.

From right back when I was a baby, I used to scream the house down (regularly – so my mother reminds me on a daily basis).
All until my dad would pop me in the carseat and take me out for a drive.

Getting out and seeing the world always calmed me down. And it still does.

Travel makes my heart happy. So I owe it to myself, to do as much of it as possible. On that note, here are 16 promises to my travel loving heart. Enjoy guys!

1. I promise to take notice of the small, beautiful things I come across everyday.
A flock of birds flying home, the changing colour of the leaves, the smiles on people’s faces.
The world is a beautiful place – I won’t take it for granted.

2. I promise I will never feel guilty for travelling.
This world is a gift. I’ve always been taught that it’s rude to refuse a gift.
Never one for rudeness – I gleefully accept. Get me on that road.

3. I promise to wake early and watch a sunrise in every place I travel to.
Anyone who knows me will know that this is a tricky one. I’ve never been an early riser…
DEFINITELY not a morning person. *Approach with caution before 11.
But the beauty and peacefulness of a place at sunrise is magical.
It’s nearly impossible to experience this at any other time of day, so I need to get over it.

4. I promise to take more photographs.
The ability to capture even a little tiny glimpse of this beautiful world we live in, is a talent that I definitely want to nurture.
I’ve always loved photography and have taught myself a fair amount over the years – but I have one hell of a lot to learn. Tips welcome!

5. I promise to smile.
A smile is a hugely powerful thing. It can break through silence, it can knock down language barriers.
It can start a friendship and open up opportunities you never knew possible.
So flash those pearly whites with me – you know it makes sense.

6. I promise to continue to embrace the art of slow travel.
You can’t truly get to know a place if you pass through within a couple of days.
So when I travel, I like to take it slow, truly immersing myself in every place I visit.
I couchsurf, hitchhike, eat in local restaurants and mingle with the local people.
That is the beauty of travel. I don’t want to blink and miss it.

7. I promise to live my life as I want to live it.
This one is fairly self explanatory. I have a habit of worrying A LOT about what other people think.
I promise to stop that. My life is mine to live and life is too bloody short to forget that.

8. I promise to eat everything in sight.
Not a difficult one for me this. I’ve never been one to turn down a good meal.
Trying local delicacies and street food wherever I travel to is key.
This may be harder in some places than other (sheeps testicles definitely aren’t an appealing prospect)
– but it’s all part of the experience.

9. I promise to fly as little as possible.
I know flying is often necessary, but I can never shake the feeling that I’m missing so much whilst I’m zooming past
thousands of feet above the beauty below. So I make a promise to myself, to try and avoid flying if I can.
I will hitchhike, take local transport, walk, sail, hop on a train… any way I can actually take in the spaces I’m passing through.
Often you uncover gems you never expected.

10. I promise to have an adventure everyday, no matter how small.
It may be taking a different route home or it may be climbing a mountain.
It may be visiting a new local town or it may be jumping out of a plane.
As they say, “life is either a daring adventure, or nothing at all.”

11. I promise to keep learning.
There is so much I want to learn, it’s almost overwhelming. From the art of blogging, writing & photography,
through the technicalities of SEO and marketing, all the way to the history and culture behind countries I visit.  I won’t loose that desire to learn new things.

12. I promise to be better at keeping in touch with those who mean a lot to me.
I’m notoriously bad at this. I read a message, chuckle to myself, reply in my brain, get distracted and forget that I actually have to physically respond.
No excuse for this. I’m royally shit and I’d hate for the people I love to feel like they mean less to me than they really do. Must do better.

13. I promise to be nicer about my body. It never said a bad word about me.
This little gem is inspired by the hilarious and hugely talented Tim Minchin. I’ve always struggled with body confidence & it’s something that can hold me back.
Singing about his body, Tim utters some of the most truthful lyrics ever written:
‘And the weirdest thing about it isI spend so much time hating itBut it never says a bad word about me.”
True story Tim. True story. (Treat your ears here).

14. I promise to never give up on my dreams.
I have big dreams, a lot of people do. But too many people let them slip away.
I dream of living a life where I’m not tied to a desk 5 days a week. I dream of travelling the world and writing about it as I go. I dream of taking photographs that inspire and living a life less ordinary.

15. I promise to do whatever it is that makes me happy.
As I’ve said previously, life is too short to do anything that doesn’t light your soul, put a smile on your face and make you happy to be alive. So, where possible, I promise to step away from any negative influences in my world and focus solely on those things that give me the right kind of butterflies.

16. I promise to keep learning.
There is so much I want to learn, it’s almost overwhelming. From the art of blogging & writing,
through the technicalities of SEO and marketing, the history and culture behind countries I visit,
all the way to the creativity of photography. I won’t loose that desire to learn new things.

16. I promise to do one thing everyday that scares me.
This one is inspired by the genius of Baz Luhrmann’s ‘Sunscreen’. If you haven’t heard the song, then stop reading right this second,
head over here and listen to number 1 on the list.
Life begins at the end of your comfort zone… I truly believe this.
It’s where you learn more about yourself and our world. I’m ready to be scared.

So there you have it. 16 promises I’ve made to my travel loving heart.
They’re out there now. I better bloody well stick to them.
